THE RIDE TO CONQUER CANCER PRESENTED BY WHEATON PRECIOUS METALS ANNOUNCES OVER $8.3 MILLION RAISED AS 9TH ANNUAL RIDE COMMENCES IN BRITISH COLUMBIA
B.C.’s largest fundraiser draws close to 2,000 riders, to advance cancer care for the people of BC
VANCOUVER: August 26, 2017 - Over $8.3 million has been raised by close to 2,000 riders, participating in the 9th annual Ride to Conquer Cancer, presented by Wheaton Precious Metals. The funds will enable the BC Cancer Foundation to support more than 47 world-leading projects to advance research and care at the BC Cancer Agency, providing hope to the 77,000 people facing cancer across British Columbia.
“With the growing number of people in our province undergoing cancer care this year, it’s moving to see the momentum our riders, donors, crew, volunteers, sponsors and supporters create in helping to save lives, ” said Sarah Roth, President and CEO of the BC Cancer Foundation.
“The Ride to Conquer Cancer is a movement and an agent of change, so whether you’re crossing the finish line this weekend or cheering on a loved one, know we are all on the same team, pedaling closer to a world free from cancer.”
The annual event sees thousands of cancer survivors, cyclists and supporters come together to participate in the two-day, over 200-kilometre Ride between Vancouver and Seattle.In nine years, the Ride to Conquer Cancer has raised over $85.3 million for the BC Cancer Foundation.
Gina Whitaker, third time Rider from West Vancouver shared why she rides: “My mother Filomena was diagnosed with extra-pulmonary small cell carcinoma in March 2015 and underwent seven rounds of palliative chemotherapy at the BC Cancer Agency.”
“After three short months of reprieve from treatment and symptoms, the cancer spread to her brain. At 60-years-young, my mom died on World Cancer Day 2016. I am riding again this year with my father and my sister on Team Fight4Fil. We’re committed to keeping my mom’s legacy alive and giving back to the teams at the BC Cancer Agency who work with patients like my mom, each and every day,’ Whitaker added.
Since 2014, Wheaton Precious Metals has proudly been the presenting sponsor of the Ride to Conquer Cancer. Sponsorship funds provided by Wheaton Precious Metals enable dollars raised by Ride participants to directly support cancer programs at the BC Cancer Agency. Their team, The Silver Bullets, has participated in the event for eight years and collectively raised over $1.1 million.

B.C.’s largest cycling fundraiser draws 1,687 riders, supporting breakthrough research and enhancements to care at the BC Cancer Agency
VANCOUVER: August 27, 2016 - The Ride to Conquer Cancer presented by Wheaton Precious Metals announced 1,687 riders helped raise $7.1 million for the BC Cancer Foundation as the eighth annual Ride commenced in British Columbia on Saturday. Funds raised through BC's largest cycling fundraiser support breakthrough cancer research and enhancements to care at the BC Cancer Agency.
Overwhelming support from the Ride to Conquer Cancer’s community of riders, donors, volunteers, crew members, and sponsors is advancing life-saving research for cancer patients in B.C.
“The experts we support at the BC Cancer Agency are recognized internationally for work in advancing research and enhancing care. Together, this passionate group of riders is fuelling breakthrough studies that offer new hope to patients,” said Sarah Roth, President and CEO of the BC Cancer Foundation.
Over 26,000 people will be diagnosed with cancer this year in this province. With the $7.1 million raised, the BC Cancer Foundation will continue to ensure research teams at the BC Cancer Agency have the funds they need to improve treatment and the standard of care for patients and their families.
“The Ride is about bringing people together to make cancer a manageable and eventually curable disease in our lifetime,” Roth added.
In eight years, the Ride to Conquer Cancer raised over $77 million for the BC Cancer Foundation. The annual event draws thousands of participants and brings together communities of cancer survivors, cyclists and supporters who train and fundraise for months in order to participate in the two-day, 200km Ride between Vancouver and Seattle.
“I lost my father, a dedicated Ride participant and former captain of Team CRANKEN, at the young age of 59 in 2013 to stage three bladder cancer,” said Kluhane Leoppky, a six-time participant from Vancouver.
“I first got involved in the Ride with my father in 2010, the same year he was diagnosed. His participation in clinical trials at the BC Cancer Agency gave our family enough time to have one last visit with my dad. We are forever grateful for the outstanding options and care he received thanks to funds raised through the Ride. To this day, I participate on Team CRANKEN with a growing number of people, all of whom were impacted by my father’s life and legacy,” Leoppky added.
Wheaton Precious Metals proudly became the presenting sponsor of the Ride to Conquer Cancer in 2014. The generous sponsorship allows dollars raised by Ride participants to directly support cancer programs at the BC Cancer Agency. Over 50 members of Wheaton Precious Metals’s team, The Silver Bullets, have participated in the Ride over the past seven years and collectively raised over $919,000. The team is comprised of mining industry members, family, and friends who share the vision of a world free from cancer.
